Joy of Motion Announces “Hot Joy Summer” Pop-up Series

Catherine (Cat) Foster to lead Afro-Fusion class on Saturday, July 24

Washington, D.C. – Joy of Motion Dance Center, a dance instruction center which will celebrate its 45th anniversary this fall, announced today its Hot Joy Summer pop-up series, beginning this Saturday, July 24. The first pop-up will be Afro-Fusion led by dancer and choreographer Catherine (Cat) Foster at 2:00pm, followed by a Q&A session at 3:30pm. Additional pop-up events will be announced in the future and feature specific dance styles taught by renowned choreographers. All Hot Joy Summer pop-ups will be held at the Joy of Motion Dance Center located at 1333 H St. NE.

Krystal Odom, interim Executive Director of Joy of Motion Dance Center, released the following statement announcing the Hot Joy Summer pop-up series:

“I am excited to welcome Catherine (Cat) Foster to the Joy of Motion Dance Center for our first Hot Joy Summer pop-up! These pop-ups will offer our dancers a chance to develop their skills in a specific style, while focusing on developing their artistry. The various pop-ups are open to all levels and abilities, and we are pleased to invite all members of the local dance community to join us at Joy of Motion!”

From Washington, DC, Catherine received her training from the DC Youth Ensemble (DCYE), Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA), and at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. She has worked with and performed the works of noted choreographers including Donald Bryd, Hinton Battle. The Fred Benjamin Dance Company (artistic director Fred Benjamin), Forces of Nature (artistic director, Abdel Salaam), Darrel Grand Moultrie. Catherine made her Broadway debut in the original cast of the hit musical FELA! produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith in 2009 and went on to tour internationally with the production until 2011. She has been an assistant choreographer for the Broadway production “Once on This Island”, the NETFLIX film “Ma Raineys Black Bottom” with Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, and other Off-Broadway productions. She’s also performed for recording artists: Alicia Keys, The Roots, Jazmine Sullivan, Seun Kuti, Davido, Angelique Kidjo, and Lauryn Hill.
