As Joy of Motion Dance Center approaches our 40th anniversary as a leading nonprofit dance education organization in the DMV, we are honored to continue to serve our community through classes, concerts, and outreach programs. Most recently, JOMDC is the winner of two Mayor’s Art Awards and was recently voted to have the Best Dance Classes for Kids by CBS DC! Here’s a glimpse of the improvements we’ve made in order to ensure that Dance is for Everyone®.
Over the past decade, we’ve increased programming and opportunities for students to perform, including our popular Studio to Stage series.
Three years ago, we began a deeply discounted theater rental program for faculty and workstudy to have an affordable opportunity to produce their own concerts, because art needs a home in order to flourish.
Last year, we remodeled the Friendship Heights lobby and upgraded the check-in desk at Bethesda, to make the environment you enter in order to practice your love of dance more inviting and practical.
In the past year, we created two new staff positions to improve studio functions and our overall communication strategy.
Just this past summer, we added three Youth Dance Companies, to ensure that youth who want that extra push, that extra bit of involvement, have a place to hone their craft, learn from the best faculty in the business, and have fun!
By this fall, we will have added a new Resident Adult Company for flamenco dancers and a new series of challenging Company Classes with the area’s up and coming and established dance companies. We’re also making visual improvements throughout our three locations as well as strategic improvements to the website to make it easier to navigate, even on your smartphone!
All of this is in addition to the exceptional classes we already offer through what we believe is the best collection of faculty in the entire DMV! We’ve got many new classes on the schedule too, topping out at over 300 classes for adults and youth per week.
In 2016, we hope to do even more to support the community: more partner schools, more outreach, more free concerts, more classes, and more opportunities to dance. We also hope to expedite your check-in process by adding smart technology, saving you time when you arrive so you can get in and get on the floor!
These improvements do not come without a price, but because we believe strongly in our central operating principle that Dance is for Everyone®, we’ve tried very hard to keep prices the same for the last eight years. In order to continue providing world-class, award-winning dance education, the adult drop-in class price will change from $17 per class to $19 per class effective September 1, 2015. We know change can be hard. That’s why we are offering all DID packages at the current rate – today through August 31, 2015. There is no limit to how many packages you can purchase, and expiration dates remain the same. For a full breakdown of the new prices click here.
We believe strongly that Dance is for Everyone, and that means not only Everyone regardless of experience level, but also Everyone in terms of income. You are a member of our dance family. You are important to us, and we are dedicated to the ideal that no one who wants to dance should be turned away for an inability to pay. That’s why, as always, in addition to our youth scholarship program, we offer numerous ways to make adult drop-in dance free: internships, theatre or studio workstudy opportunities, and serving on the Street Team sharing your love of dance with the community at festivals and other events. The positive effects of dance never cease to amaze us – after nearly 40 years, we still get chills watching a Studio to Stage show, and we light up when students of all ages tell us that dancing at JOMDC has changed their lives for the better.
