Youth Dance Project 2018

Joy of Motion Dance Center’s annual Youth Dance Project is a showcase of young choreographic voices that will take place on March 10 & 11, 2018. Students in grades 6-12 who are currently enrolled in any Joy of Motion class or program are eligible to audition with 2-8 minute pieces.

Pieces must be between 2 and 8 minutes. Dances are evaluated on their potential, with the understanding that coaching will
take place before and after the audition (see Faculty Guidance section below). Adjudicators are looking for the following:

  • A clear beginning, middle, and end
  • Strong choreographic voice
  • Interesting compositional choices
  • Dynamic use of space, time, and levels
  • Appropriate and integrated music selection
  • Costumes that fit the theme and/or movement style
  • Consideration given to lighting design
  • Thorough rehearsal

Adjudication panel: Sarah Chapin, Helen Hayes, Dani Quirion

January 28, 11:59 PM: Deadline for audition registration at
February 25: Live audition of completed works. See “Expectations” below for more information.
March 10 and 11: Technical rehearsals and show. Following each concert, there will be a 15-minute Q&A with the choreographers.

The deadline to register is January 28, 2018. Between then and the live audition on February 25, each group MUST
schedule at least one one rehearsal visit from a Joy of Motion faculty member, chosen from the roster below.

Students may not schedule more than two rehearsal visits/coaching sessions before the audition.

After the audition, each group chosen for the show will be assigned a faculty member for at least one rehearsal visit before
the show. The teacher will help to coach students in the development of their work.

Roster of those available to help with coaching: Kourtney Ginn • Samantha Greymont • Helen Hayes • Elizabeth Malone • Krystal Odom

The choreographer, NOT their parent or guardian, must contact a studio manager to schedule rehearsal space.
Rehearsal space is free of charge for students who are registered to audition (by January 28) or have been selected for
the show (after February 25). Maximum 2 hours per week per group. Space can only be scheduled when it does not conflict
with Joy of Motion classes or studio rentals.
Students ages 16+ may rehearse without adult supervision, provided they behave responsibly, ask a studio manager for
assistance if there are any injuries or problems, and leave the space in the condition in which they found it. Violation of these
terms renders students ineligible for space.
Any group with dancers under age 16 must have an adult present, and is subject to the same terms as above.

We can’t wait to showcase the work of our fabulous young choreographers!
