This year, the Classical Repertory Dance Theatre presents works by guest choreographers Jerene Aldinger, Kimberly Parmer and Kathleen Weitz, plus Founder/Artistic Director Miya Hisaka. CRDT is also expanding their repertoire of classical ballet to include not only pointe and soft shoe works, but also character dance from the era of court performances. Two emotionally poignant pieces of contemporary dance fill out this evening of passion and dedication to the arts by the men and women of CRDT.
CRDT will perform excerpts from two classic Marius Petipa’s ballets; Swan Lake (1895) featuring guest artist Alvaro Palau (Colombian formerly with Washington Ballet and currently with Bowen-McAuley Dance), and Paquita (1881).
Snag, a term used in forestry, refers to a standing dead tree. In choreographing this piece to Samskeyti by Sigur Ros, up and coming California choreographer, Jerene Aldinger, used the lifespan of a tree as an allegory to describe a distinct chapter in one’s life. Eight daring dancers embrace change, vulnerability and transition in this haunting contemporary ballet.
Excerpts of Founder/Artistic Director Miya Hisaka’s Silent Honor video dance documentary to the powerful, poetic music of Savanj Rooms and Kyrie Elesion express the universal messages of loss, human compassion, and hope through the collaboration of CRDT and Georgetown University’s Gelardin New Media Center.

This quote led New York native, Kimberly Parmer, to find inspiration in Bach’s Contrapunctus 1 and Suite for Solo Cello No. 2 in D Minor, VI, for her ballet based Fugue & Suite. Driven by musical structure, seven dancers en pointe paint the stage with movement, embodying the quality and demeanor of Bach’s work.
Folk Dance by London trained guest choreographer, Kathleen Weitz, is a slightly contemporary take on character dance, which is a stylized, theatrical form of European folk dance and an integral part of the classical ballet tradition. The piece captures the spontaneous and joyful nature of Eastern European folk dance, playing with the intricate rhythms of traditional Polish and Ukrainian music as interpreted by two contemporary bands.

CRDT focuses on technique classes, rehearsals, performances, outreach programs, as well as developing production and arts management skills. CRDT presents national and international guest choreographers and master classes as well as student works. CRDT is committed to developing quality performance standards and practices.
