Class Levels at Joy of Motion

At Joy of Motion, we believe that Dance is for Everyone. Whether today is the first step in your dance journey or if you’re an experienced mover looking for a dance home, we’ve saved a spot in class for you. Our talented teaching artists motivate youth and adult students and challenge them in our supportive, judgment-free classes for youth and adults. Our classes can be broken down into several different level designations. Use this guide to help find the best level for you or your dancer!

ADULT CLASS LEVELS

Intro I

Classes are for students who are true beginners. No prior dance experience is necessary!

Intro II

Classes are for students who have taken Intro I or for dancers with experience in a similar style.

Community Classes

Community classes, or classes with no level designation, are for students with some experience in a style and these classes appeal to the vast majority of our drop in students. Typically, students will have one or more years of experience for classes in a genre/style like African, Ballet, Contemporary, Flamenco, Jazz, Modern. Students in Dance Fitness classes do not need any experience to sign up! The pace and difficulty will vary from class to class and descriptions will be added by the instructors soon! Formerly called All Levels/Beginner/Advanced Beginner level.

Intermediate/Advanced Classes

Intermediate/Advanced classes are for students with moderate to extensive experience in a style. These classes appeal to dancers with rigorous recent training, pre-professional dancers, para-professional dancers, professional dancers, and dance educators. The pace and difficulty will vary from class to class and descriptions will be added by the instructors soon! Formerly called Intermediate or Advanced level.

YOUTH CLASS LEVELS

Kidmotion

Teaching our youngest dancers, students Ages 2-5, how to move to music and how to be in a dance class. Students play movement and dance-based games. Students also develop motor skills, physical, and spatial awareness. These students do not typically perform.

Level I

Students who are new to dance, have less than one year of experience in a style, or have not mastered the skills & competencies for level II (varies by style/genre).

Level II

Students who have a minimum of 1+ years of experience in a style or have not mastered the skills & competencies for level III (varies by style/genre).

Level III / IV

Students who have a minimum of 2+ years of experience in a style. Currently the highest level offered.

Youth Performance Training for Performance Companies

Training programs in hip hop, jazz, modern, and tap for young dancers, in Grades 3-12, who love to be onstage. Training classes in the fall are open to all students, but recommended for students with a minimum of 1 year of experience in a style. Not currently offered.
