What are “Series” and “Drop-In” Classes?

You’re enrolled in a Series class, which is ideal for students looking for 9 to 13 weeks of cumulative dance training, tailored to their level and interests. The majority of our Series classes are best for those who have never danced before, or have limited experience with a particular style. However, we do have some series classes for all levels, such as our Jukebox Social and Traveler Series.

You also may want to try Drop-in Technique and Training classes now or in the future. These are ideal for dancers who have taken classes before and would like a flexible schedule. Joy of Motion offers drop-in classes in a variety of styles and levels, and they are scheduled throughout the week at all three studios. Many dancers become weekly regulars once they find their perfect classes and favorite teachers.

Class Levels

At Joy of Motion, we emphasize personal growth in each dancer’s journey by facilitating a welcoming, supportive studio atmosphere. We recommend that each student begin their journey at the level where they feel most comfortable and develop at their own pace. From there you can work with your instructor and studio staff to find the best class and level for you. Class levels range from Basics (an introductory level for brand new dancers) to Advanced, where students are working for mastery.

Each instructor has their own style and pace and that may influence how the level feels to you.

Basics – starting to dance.
These classes are for new dancers and students who have never taken a dance class in the selected style. No prior training required. You will learn the basics necessary to progress to a beginner level class. It is not uncommon for students to repeat this class before they advance to a beginner level.

Beginner – getting a foundation.
For students with some training in the selected style or a similar style. We recommend our Basics, or Intro, level enrollment class as a prerequisite, or at least 3 months prior training. Beginner level is excellent for students returning to dance after an extended absence as well as students who wish to continue training that was recently begun.

Advanced Beginner – exercising and building upon a working knowledge.
For students with a thorough working knowledge of the style. We recommend at least 1 year of prior training. This level appeals to many students and it is common to find a wide range of students attending this level.

Intermediate – achieving a heightened skill level.
For students going beyond a working knowledge to learn and improve on more challenging skills and combinations. We recommend at least 3 years training.

Advanced – working for mastery.
For students with expertise in the selected style, who work on a pre-professional or professional level. We recommend at least 4 years of training.

Please note: These level recommendations are generalizations and vary when there has been a lengthy lapse in training. Recommendations depend on the frequency of training and can vary with styles. We recommend that you speak with your instructors to see if you are attending the appropriate class. Studio Managers are also available to help you find class options and make recommendations. Please give them a call!
