Faculty Features: Dance Auditions Tips from Alana Hill

Want to find out how you can improve your dance audition experience and impress your judges? Alana Hill, Director of Joy of Motion Dance Center’s Youth Hip Hop Performance Company Groove Elements, shares some useful audition tips for dancers.

  •  Auditions are like a class. The dancer should come prepared to learn and demonstrate what they have learned to the best of their ability. It’s important to listen and ask questions at the appropriate times.
  • Don’t be nervous. Every judge has been in your place. We appreciate seeing you have fun during auditions. Don’t be afraid to show us that you are having fun. Smile!
  • If you don’t get a move, keep going. Don’t allow that one move to frustrate you. It’s important for us to see you work through it and not get frustrated. When you are in a company, you don’t get every movement right the first time. We want to see you handle difficult movements positively.
  • If you don’t make it the first time out, please do not give up. You should continue to take classes so you will continue to improve. The teachers at Joy of Motion Dance Center are there to help you be successful. Ask what you need to do to improve and walk into class every day working on the critiques you get in class. You will get there sooner than you think.

Auditions for the 2011-2012 season of Groove Elements will take place Saturday, May 22nd 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 28th 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Joy of Motion Dance Center Bethesda. For more information about Youth Dance Company auditions, please visit our website.
