Anti-Racism Pledge

  • In order to become more anti-racist, and to build a dance community that can truly be for everyone, I pledge to uphold the following:

    - I will embody the ethos that Dance is for Everyone.

    - I will support, encourage, and empower dancers from all backgrounds and cultures in our classes.

    - I will challenge incidents of racist and discriminatory behavior and support others who are challenging racist behavior. If I witness or experience racist behavior, I will:

    • File an incident report through Joy of Motion’s staff page. This report will be sent to Joy of Motion’s Executive Leadership & to the Faculty Committee. These two parties will work together to create an action plan for addressing the incident. Examples of recourse include:
    • Intervention and/or mediation with the offending party
    • Opportunities for a safe space to offer confrontation space between the victim & offending party
    • Written apology
    • Written warning
    • Mandated anti-racism training
    • Dismissal from employment
    • Public apology on behalf of the organization as appropriate

    - I commit to examine my own actions and biases and to seek with humility to correct my own actions that are racist or discriminatory. I will:

    • Participate in Joy of Motion-sponsored professional development opportunities and anti-racism training to the best of my ability.

    - I commit to listening to those who have a different race, heritage, culture, and experience from my own with an open heart and open mind, and to learn from them what words, actions, practices, policies, or structures they experience as racist.

    - I will encourage open and productive conversations on race and racism with my students.

    - I will incorporate the history of my dance form through a multicultural lens; to celebrate the triumphs, grieve the tragedies, and learn from the mistakes of the past. I will:

    • Educate myself on my dance form's history
    • Thread dance history in my teaching

    - I will recognize, challenge, and actively dismantle the inequities that have led to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) being vastly underrepresented in the dance space; and will invite, celebrate, and support our BIPOC dance community in our classes. I will:

    • Actively recruit and welcome BIPOC students into my classroom
    • Work to make my teaching culturally relevant to the students in my class

    - I commit to honor and embrace diversity and to stand against racism wherever it appears.
