EXPECTATIONS

Pieces must be between 2 and 8 minutes. Dances are evaluated on their potential, with the understanding that
coaching may take place before or after the audition (see Faculty Guidance section below).

  • Adjudicators are looking for the following:
  • A clear beginning, middle, and end
  • Strong choreographic voice
  • Interesting compositional choices
  • Dynamic use of space, time, and levels
  • Appropriate and integrated music selection
  • Costumes that fit the theme and/or movement style
  • Consideration given to lighting design
  • Thorough rehearsal

FACULTY GUIDANCE

Either before or after the audition, students are welcomed to ask their teachers to visit a rehearsal and provide
feedback. Faculty guidance is not required.

REHEARSAL SPACE

The choreographer, NOT their parent or guardian, must contact a studio manager to schedule rehearsal space.
Rehearsal space is free of charge for students who are registered to audition (by January 20) or have been
selected for the show (after February 3). Maximum 2 hours per week per group. Space can only be scheduled when
it does not conflict with Joy of Motion classes or studio rentals.
Students ages 16+ may rehearse without adult supervision, provided they behave responsibly, ask a studio
manager for assistance if there are any injuries or problems, and leave the space in the condition in which they
found it. Violation of these terms renders students ineligible for space.
Any group with dancers under age 16 must have an adult present, and is subject to the same terms as above.
We can’t wait to showcase the work of our fabulous young choreographers!
