Youth Program

We offer over 100 youth dance classes and workshops that train, inspire, and support dancers as at all ages and stages of development starting at age 1. Youth dance classes are by enrollment only and are carefully designed to be age-appropriate in style and material covered.  All students who are new to Joy of Motion should enroll in level 1 classes in the style of their choice.

Although divided into a fall, winter, and spring session, our youth classes function in a school year-long format (with camps offered in the summer). The class levels do not correspond to years of study; students may take several years to master a level. Our faculty members are also available to assess your student and recommend what level is best for them.

If a class is canceled, or if a student has to miss class for any reason, then they may take a make-up class of their choosing. Please schedule your make-up class with your studio staff. If you have any additional questions, please contact us.

Prior to registration, please read our Studio Policies. We also have Dance Attire information to help prepare your child for a successful learning experience. Financial aid is available.

Joy of Motion’s newly formed Dance Institute provides rigorous conservatory-style training programs to youth and adult students that are dedicated to dance. Under the direction of Helen Hayes, students and faculty in these rich, curriculum-based training programs are committed to pursuing the highest standards of quality at all levels. Students of all ages in the Dance Institute program benefit from the emphasis on the holistic training with a focus on strengthening the mind as well as the body and continue to reap the benefits both inside and outside of the studio. Dancers will collaborate with local and international choreographers in addition to learning choreography composition. Dance Institute students also have exceptional performance opportunities throughout the Greater Washington region, including venues such as the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, the Greenberg Theatre, and the White House.
Dancers will learn repertory by core faculty members and guest artists throughout the year. In addition, improvisation and composition are important parts of the curriculum, giving students the tools to find their own voices through the power of dance. Dance Institute students have exceptional performance opportunities throughout the Greater Washington area such as The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, The Atlas Performing Arts Center, The Greenberg Theater, Dance Place and the White House.
