Youth Dance Project

A showcase of young choreographic voices. Open to all young choreographers currently enrolled in a Joy of Motion class or program who are in grades 6-12. Dancers must also be in grades 6-12.
January 22 at 11:59PM: Cutoff for audition registration (register here)
January 29: Live audition of completed works. See “Adjudication criteria” below for more info.
February 25 + 26: Technical rehearsals and show. Following each concert, there will be a 15-minute Q&A with the choreographers.
Pieces must be between 2 and 8 minutes. Pieces are evaluated on their potential, with the understanding that coaching will take place after the audition (see Faculty Guidance section below). Adjudicators are looking for the following:
  • Pieces with a beginning, middle, and end
  • Strong choreographic voice
  • Interesting compositional choices
  • Dynamic use of space, time, levels, and groups
  • Integration and appropriateness of music selection
  • Costumes that fit the theme and/or movement style
  • Consideration given to lighting design
  • Thorough rehearsal
Adjudication panel: Sarah Chapin, Dani Quirion, Ayanna Williams
The panel’s goal is to select approximately 9 pieces that comprise a well-balanced 40 to 60-minute show. They aim to select at least two pieces from each of the following grade brackets:
  • 6th-8th grade choreographers
  • 9th-10th grade choreographers
  • 11th-12th grade choreographers
No Joy of Motion faculty will coach any groups before the audition to avoid unfair advantage. After the audition, each group chosen for the show MUST schedule at least one rehearsal visit from a Joy of Motion faculty member, chosen from the roster below. The teacher will help to coach students in the development of their work.
Roster of those available to help with coaching:
Helen Hayes | Alana Hill | Angela Ingram
Mackenzie Shimon | Elizabeth Malone | Krystal Odom
Rehearsal space The choreographer, NOT their parent or guardian, must reach out to a studio manager to schedule space. Rehearsal space is free of charge for students who are registered to audition (before January 29th) or have been selected for the show (after Jan 29th). Maximum 2 hours per week per group. Space can only be scheduled when it does not compete with Joy of Motion classes or studio rentals.
Students ages 16+ may rehearse without adult supervision, provided they behave responsibly, go get the studio manager if there are any injuries or problems, and leave the space in the condition in which they found it. Violation of these terms renders students ineligible for space. Any group with dancers under 16 must have an adult present, and is subject to the same terms as above.
We can’t wait to showcase the work of our fabulous young choreographers, register today!
