Performance Classes

Performance Classes
Our performance classes are offered each semester in various dance disciplines as an opportunity for the adult student to experience the process and thrill of performing.  Performance classes culminate in a showcase performance at the end of the semester.

Broadway Jazz Performance Class
with Amy Carson
Tuesday, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., Friendship Heights
(6/13 - 8/8/06)
$140 for 8 weeks - Register
Level:  Beginning II Jazz and above

This exciting performance class will take you back to 1980 when Times Square was a pulsating red light district filled with pimps, prostitutes, and hustlers. Join Amy Carson as she transforms you into a "working girl" as you learn the female anthem, "My Body" from the Broadway musical, "The Life".  Filled with gyrating, hip-thrusting, bootie-shaking choreography, this energetic jazz number is perfect for anyone who wants to shake what their Mama gave them.  All students are required to attend class, be prompt and demonstrate a command of the choreography in order to perform. Students must purchase or create their own costuming according to teacher guidelines. All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will culminate in a showcase performance for friends, family and the community on Saturday, August 12, at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m., at our Jack Guidone Theater, admission $15.00 general admission, $12.00 students/seniors.

Jazz Performance Class
with Maurice Johnson

Level:  Intermediate Jazz, Modern, or Ballet

This Jazz Performance Class will contain plenty of ‘cutting edge’ jazz movements as well as more traditional jazz elements. Mr. Johnson’s work will challenge students to work on a higher level mentally, physically and emotionally. Mr. Johnson has studied and performed with Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago and has studied at the Alvin Ailey School.  His popular teaching style and choreography is informed by these experiences, but his style is all his own.  This performance class promises to be a unique experience where students will learn an original piece created for the group. All students are required to attend class, be prompt and demonstrate a command of the choreography in order to perform. Students must purchase or create their own costuming according to teacher guidelines. All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will culminate in a showcase performance for friends, family and the community on Saturday, August 12, at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m., at our Jack Guidone Theater, admission $15.00 general admission, $12.00 students/seniors.

Flamenco/Spanish Dance Performance Class

Level:  Beginning 2 Flamenco/Spanish Dance and above

Bring finesse and style to your flamenco. This performance class is a great opportunity to strengthen performance skills and take your technique to a higher level. Aspects of stage presence and professionalism will be covered. All students are required to attend class, be prompt and demonstrate a command of the choreography in order to perform. Students must purchase or create their own costuming according to teacher guidelines. All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. Creating A Solo - Middle Eastern Performance Class

Level:  Beginning 2 Belly Dance and above

This class will introduce the fundamentals of choreography and address specific elements for creating exciting Middle Eastern dance solos.  Class will focus on make-up techniques, costuming, musical selection, and music analysis.  All students are required to attend class, be prompt and demonstrate a command of the choreography in order to perform. Students must purchase or create their own costuming according to teacher guidelines. All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable. This class will culminate in a showcase performance for friends, family and the community on Sunday, August 6, at 7:00 p.m., at our Jack Guidone Theater, admission $10.00.

Veil Performance Class

Level:  Beginning 2 Belly Dance and above

Soulful and seductive, veil dance has become a vital component in American Belly Dance performances, even though it is not traditionally Arabic.  Learn veil dancing technique, including placement, turns and wafting, while exploring the alluring aspects of concealment and display.  All students are required to attend class, be prompt and demonstrate a command of the choreography in order to perform. Students must purchase or create their own costuming according to teacher guidelines. All efforts will be made to keep costuming expenses affordable.
