The goal of Motion Express is to provide an entry point to the art of dance by engaging high-risk DC youth, ages 4-18, in dance classes, training, and performances while creating life-long dance enthusiasts and well-rounded citizens. The objectives of Motion Express are to teach students the art of dance, to promote physical activity and encourage healthful choices using dance, and to foster healthy relationship building through the social activities inherent in a dance class setting.

“It’s incredibly important for kids to be exposed to different types of dance and movement. It teaches them self-regulation skills, how to express themselves in a different way, balance and coordination, gross motor activity skills. It helps them engage in really fun, meaningful ways. When the kids make different shapes with their bodies, they’re learning shape awareness but she’s having them do it in a kinesthetic way which is helping drive a lesson in a way that keeps them engaged for a longer period of time.” – Mr. Harding, DCPS teacher at Maury Elementary School
