
Roger Plaut
Ballet
Roger Plaut first studied ballet at the Maryland School of the Ballet and the Academy of the Maryland Youth Ballet in Bethesda. His teachers included Tensia Fonseca, Roy Gean, Michelle Lees, and Eric Hampton. During his teenage years, he studied on scholarship at the American Ballet Theatre and Joffrey Ballet schools and the School of American Ballet.
Mr. Plaut danced with the junior companies of American Ballet Theatre and the Joffrey before joining the Joffrey Ballet, where he danced for seven years. While with the Joffrey, he participated in national and international tours, performing in the works of Robert Joffrey, Gerald Arpino, Frederick Ashton, John Cranko, and Paul Taylor. In addition, Mr. Plaut worked with such choreographers as Mark Morris, James Kudelka, Laura Dean, and Peter Pucci.
After spending a year with the Zurich Ballet, Mr. Plaut joined the Washington Ballet, where he danced in works by Choo San Goh, Nils Christe, Graham Lustig, Rick McCullough, and Monica Levy, among others. He has also danced locally with Bowen McCauley Dance, Sharon Wyrrick, and The Folger Consort. Mr. Plaut has taught and choreographed for the Maryland Youth Ballet and has also taught for the Lisbon Dance Company and the Zurich Ballet. He has taught at the Washington School of Ballet, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, and Montgomery College. Mr. Plaut currently teaches ballet at Joy of Motion Dance Center. He teaches ballet, floor barre, and stretch classes at Jane Bittner's Dance Center. Mr. Plaut choreographed four pieces as part of the Washington Ballet's Ballets from Within workshops, one of which was chosen for Dance Place's New Releases program in 1996. He has also set three of his works on the Georgetown University Dance Company. Mr. Plaut is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in microbiology at the University of Maryland.
