Emily Wessel

Emily was introduced to hip hop in the early nineties and fell in love with the culture. It was not until 2004 that she finally started to hit the floor and express what the music made her feel. With this dance style she began to find her voice and learn to express herself as a dancer and as an artist. With a background in gymnastics, hip hop, house, and jazz dance, she incorporates a wide range of skills into her art form. Her love of the music and the wisdom she has gained from understanding the culture, has given her the motivation to work hard at improving while remaining humble enough to consider herself still a student. She wishes to pass on some of the valuable lessons she has learned about the culture, community and herself by sharing this dance form with others who are also moved or inspired by the music.

Emily has had the opportunity to travel and take several workshops with the founders of this urban dance style as well as working with many of the local DC/MD/VA artists, who have given her a strong foundation in the culture and movement. Currently she is teaching adult Intro to Breakdancing (b-boy/b-girl) and youth beginner Breakdancing classes for the 6th to 12th grade levels at the Joy of Motion Dance Center. She hopes to humbly convey some of the talent and wisdom that has been generously shared with her through her journey.
