
Derek Brown
Derek Brown began his dancing career at the age of 12 and studied dance at the Suitland High School of the Performing Arts. He graduated with a major in modern dance and had the opportunity to work with Judith Jamison and trained in the Graham technique, Horton, Ballet, Jazz, African and other forms of cultural dance. Derek furthered his training with the Washington Ballet and the Boston Conservatory of the Performing Arts, majoring in Dance Education. His first big break came when hired to dance in a commercial for MCI. Over the last decade, Derek has taught Jazz and Hip-Hop at various dance schools, and guest instructors to many local dance companies. In 2003 Derek began his partnership with Bally Total Fitness teaching his signature Video Choreography Class. He has also been a choreographer and guest instructor for The Washington Wizards Dancers and the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders and Redskin Juniors. Recently, Derek has performed and worked with BET, TV One, Fox Channel 5, and toured across the globe to entertain our men and women in the Armed Forces in Egypt, Turkey, and throughout Europe. He has also performed on stage in LA with Pink, opened for Ashanti, and choreographed and performed for Grammy Award winning R&B singer Monica in several live performances. He is a co-founder and director of the X Faction Dance Company in Washington, D.C. and choreographer to several local recording artists. Recently, he can be
seen in the box office hit "Step Up" and is currently working with Mya on her soon to be released "Liberation" album. Derek is excited about his new endeavors, and his relationship with Joy of Motion Dance Center.
