Joy of Motion Dance Center (JOMDC) believes that dance education does not only happen in the studio, but also through the experience of being in or watching a performance. To that end, JOMDC has an active production calendar of performances, concerts and events held throughout the year that provide unforgettable learning opportunities for our youth and adult students. In turn, these performances also provide enrichment for the community, and for many, a first time exposure to dance. Our performances are offered either free of charge or at affordable rates to make dance accessible to a broad audience. We make the experience of performance fun and present it at its artistic best. JOMDC productions are held at our own Jack Guidone Theater and many other theaters, schools, community centers and neighborhood festivals throughout the region.

gaga technique master class with tom weinberger
Location: JOMDC Friendship Heights (5207 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20015)Sunday, February 12, 2012
5:30 - 6:45 p.m. Dance Class
6:45 - 7:00 p.m. Question and Answer Session
FREE for all participants
Level: Intermediate and above modern
Please note: This is a GAGA technique master class developed by Israeli Choreographer Ohad Naharin. This is not a class exploring Lady Gaga's choreography.
Gaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina, and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga raises awareness of physical weaknesses, awakens numb areas, exposes physical fixations, and offers ways for their elimination. The work improves instinctive movement and connects conscious and unconscious movement, and it allows for an experience of freedom and pleasure in a simple way, in a pleasant space, in comfortable clothes, accompanied by music, each person with himself and others. “We become more aware of our form. We connect to the sense of the endlessness of possibilities. We explore multi-dimensional movement; we enjoy the burning sensation in our muscles, we are ready to snap, we are aware of our explosive power and sometimes we use it. We change our movement habits by finding new ones. We go beyond our familiar limits. We can be calm and alert at once.” – Ohad Naharin
This master class is part of a series of outreach events connected to the February 25, 2012 8pm performance of NEXT: ISRAEL at the Harman Center for the Arts. Paul Gordon Emerson debuts his new dance company, Company | E, with NEXT: ISRAEL, a program celebrating extraordinary choreographers with deep roots in Israel’s Gaga dance style. NEXT: ISRAEL is presented by the Embassy of Israel, Shakespeare Theatre Company, and Washington Performing Arts Society. For more information visit www.wpas.org.

General Admission: $12 in advance, $20 at the door
YC2 (pronounced YC Squared) is the launch of Mich-Mash Production’s Young Choreographers Collective, a training program for emerging choreographers. The evening length concert features premieres by founding members Elizabeth O’dell and Matina Phillips as well as Artistic Director Micheline Heal.
Inspired by being newly married, Odell will premiere a series of vignettes that examines the concept of being married in both traditional and non-traditional ways, questioning her own beliefs and the expected norms of society. Phillips will be premiering excerpts of a dynamic and athletic work that examines the idea of not being able to sleep: the different thoughts and occurrences that happen instead. Heal will be premiering “Still Lifes” – a series of studies on the seasons akin to still life paintings – as well as excerpts of her upcoming evening-length work “Perchance to Dream” – a work that incorporates traditional Chinese dance props and costumes into contemporary Modern dance to tell a story about hope.
