HIP HOP
(See STREET JAZZ and THRASH JAZZ under Jazz Technique.)
INTRODUCTION TO HIP HOP
Students will complete this class
equipped with knowledge of Hip Hop history and culture, which are the spine of
the dance form. Students will gain a valuable understanding and
appreciation of the improvisational nature of this dance form while learning
basic movements and terminology. Throughout the session, the class will
examine different manifestations of this dance form -- breaking, popping and
locking, house, and fusion -- while equipping students with the fundamentals of
each style. While no previous training is required, classes will use basic
body isolations found in other technique classes. This class will break
down steps and technique and also emphasize bringing style and personality to
the movement...Hip Hop is never done small and students will be encouraged to
step outside of the box and dance big. While no
previous dance experience is necessary, students are encouraged to take
Introduction to Dance Technique and/or Introduction
to the 4 Elements of Dance
prior to enrolling.

Hip hop encompasses movement that has elements of poppin', locking, and
breaking as well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to
develop their own sense of style. Hip
hop is urban, it’s street, it’s diverse and forever changing. Please
do not wear street shoes into class.

BREAKDANCING
“Breaking” is one of the core elements of hip hop dance.
Popularized in the 1980’s by such movies as Breakin’, Beat Street and
Flashdance, the form was developed on the streets of New York by mostly Latino
and African-American dancers. Learn
the basics of this exciting form, from the top-rock, the steps one does before
hitting the floor, to the six-step and other floor moves and freezes, to
battling with a partner. This class is designed for women and men.
HIP HOP SKILLS & TECHNIQUES
Are you a drop-in regular or Intro to Hip Hop graduate who still is unclear on
how to top rock, pop or lock? This new and exciting class is designed for
dancers at all levels to learn, hone and further develop Hip Hop dance skills.
Instead of focusing on choreography, the class centers on drilling movements and
techniques so that students can begin to develop or reinforce mastery of
skills. The class is still full of the same energy as any other Hip
Hop class, but is designed to ensure students are learning proper form and
technique that will enhance their abilities to perform Hip Hop dance.
