Middle Eastern Dance Winter
Workshops Tahia Carioka was considered Egypt's greatest belly dancer during the Golden Era of Belly Dance (1930 - 1950). Through video clips of her dancing and a careful analysis of her technique, you will learn her signature moves and the secrets of why, during WW2, English generals, French diplomats, Egyptian pashas, Arab sheiks and occasional kings longed to get their hands on her.
Workshop #2 Taksim is a necessary part of all Middle Eastern Dance performances regardless of your style of dance. It is your special moment to connect with the music and interpret it with beautiful arms and isolations. Each instrument will pull something different out of the dancer. This workshop will teach students of all levels the necessary improvisational skills and the best ways to interpret different instruments fully so that the dancer can create a diverse and exciting taksim. Artemis has written numerous well respected articles on this subject.
Workshop #3
Learn the art of dancing with a stick. First adopted by the street performers of old, this well-known Egyptian prop dance is a favorite among customers. Guaranteed to capture their attention, this combination of male combat dances and female flirting will melt anyone's heart. Bring a cane and learn how to twirl it, move it and dance with it.
The Kurds are known for breaking into dance at the slightest provocation -- and then carrying on for hours! Let this spirited tradition take root in your body by learning a few very simple and more complex line dances. For additional inspiration you will see images of Kurds in action and try on beautiful traditional costumes.
Workshop #5
Lebanese style belly dance is well known in much of Arab world, and especially in the heavily transited Gulf region. It is, essentially, the same movement as in Egyptian style, but with a few important differences such
as tempo, timings, use of space, costuming, and, of course, music. In this
workshop, we will explore the aspects of Lebanese dance that make it unique. We will also play with some typical combinations in an improvisational format, and try out a variety of musical examples. Just imagine a party or night club in Beirut! Students must bring a hip scarf and flat dance shoes and/or bare feet. The use of high heels will be discussed and demonstrated - but
high heels will NOT be used in the workshop.
